Longboat Key - Florida

This, in my book, was the perfect beach day. Chris and I were staying at the Longboat Key Club and Resort, which is on the very tip of the barrier island. We had a room with a balcony that overlooked the ocean and that's where I meditated as the sun came up. Then I went down to the beach to read for a while. Longboat key has beautiful world-renown white sand beaches, and the club provides lounge chairs, umbrellas, towels, and everything you need.  I was even able to join a class that was doing yoga by the water's edge. What a treat! Downward dog in paradise.

Since it wasn't high season, the beaches were relatively uncrowded.  The people in my sketch staked their claim early and seemed ready to make a day of it.  I'm more restless; I walked, read, sketched, and then went for a swim in the pool.  Just a perfect day.

Marie Selby Gardens - Sarasota

Selby Concert - Sarasota

Selby Gardens - Sarasota

Sorry for the gap in posts; I've been crazy busy with art fairs, a workshop, and lots of commissions that need to be finished by the holidays (not that I'm complaining!).

Before all this Chris and I decided to take a relaxing mini-vacation down in Longboat Key. I mean, it's silly; we live in Florida and we never go to the beach. We chose Longboat Key because it's supposed to have beautiful beaches, it's right next to cute St. Armand's Circle in Sarasota for restaurants and shopping, and it's only an hour and a half from Tampa.

Chris had two brilliant ideas for the trip down.  One was to stop at the outlets at Ellenton;  I'm not a big shopper, but it was fun way to snap up a few things we needed including a bag full of excellent dark chocolate.  We always need chocolate!

The second was to visit the beautiful Marie Selby Gardens in Sarasota.  So many people have raved about these botanical gardens which surround an old Florida estate that we had to go, plus they were having a brass concert.  Chris plays trumpet as well as being an avid gardener, so this was right up his alley.  I had a great time sketching and the concert goers seemed to really be enjoying the music, the day and the beautiful, expansive gardens.
