The Wilderness Lodge at Lake Moerki is a sprawling arrangement of rooms around a central lodge with dining areas and lounges full of plush easy chairs and fireplaces with cosy lit fires. All rooms overlook a river that feeds from Lake Moerki. When we first drove into the parking lot we were pleased to spot a Backroads tourist bus. We knew this was a good hotel because we had toured with the same company in Costa Rica and they took great care of their clients.

The next day Chris and I took an early morning kayak trip. The hotel has a stash of small plastic kayaks that the owner refers to as "bathtubs" because they're so short and wide. But they're still fun. When we put in the river we could see the current was moving pretty quickly because of recent rains. Only once I was on the river did I realized how quickly. Soon I was paddling as hard as I could, but was barely making any progress. But I kept at it, and was rewarded by an enchanting scene once we reached Lake Moerki. The sun was just peaking from behind the surrounding steep hills that were covered by dark green trees. On one edge was a marsh with golden reeds that just glowed with the soft morning light. And we had the whole place to ourselves. It was a magical paddle, followed by a hearty breakfast back at the lodge.
